“Urban Habitat”
The world has reached a population of 7 billion people! This astronomical jump in the number of humans that inhabit the earth has spatial and environmental consequences which in turn have societal, economic, and cultural implications for each and every one of us.
As cities become denser with buildings, and the number of people that live in each square mile grows exponentially, the need for accessible and dynamic open space increases. Please for respite, places for play, and places for social interaction, become the relief that we need from our otherwise hectic lives.
In addition to these spaces being dynamic and accessible, Urban environments have a need for “dual use” spaces that cane have completely different functions based on the time of day or week, For example an urban open space could be a: Park by day, and parking by night, or outdoor food vending space during the week, and gallery exhibit during the weekend, etc…
“Urban Habitat” is a dual-use parklet that is designed to provide a public place for citizens to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the city around them, while allowing for participation in activities such as gardening. This parklet embraces the recycle and reuse of urban elements such as “dumpsters” to provide planting areas, seating, while also acting as “urban art” canvases for graffiti artists.

“PLAnTFORM”
PLAnTFORM introduces a new approach on using available space to create a garden setting in urban and suburban environments. This vision renovates the existing landscape, allocating a new dimension of space and plantable areas. It capitalizes on the function and science of roof gardens and transforms it to be used by gardeners as a landscape on a usable plane. PLAnTFORMS take a modern approach at benefitting the environment by creating more absorbable surfaces, reducing runoff while also providing the sensual and aesthetic qualities that people love about gardens.

The concept for the Darjit garden is to empower by demonstrating how to reuse cultural waste to create and beautify outdoor living space without making more demand on natural resources. It will be a sculptural garden made from recycled material, featuring , Darjit and Mosaics, old car tires, plastic bottles, shattered safety glass, broken bottle glass, glass bottles, scrap steel, etc. There will be a central steel tower holding up a canopy of hanging gardens. Entrance columns lead to Darjit sculptures that create seating/congregating areas. An aeration water feature pond, three gray water systems demonstrating how to safely irrigate with the different types of gray water produced by a home, and some cleaning system’s that are good for use in the garden.

“Dynamic Reflection”
Dynamic Reflection is a public gathering space, dedicated to the community. The garden is inspired by the way the Occupy Movement has brought people from across the globe to fight for justice and equality in their own nations. The garden is a tribute to those who have used public spaces to gather in peace and in unity. It is a space where people have come together to build the leaning flagstone wall, in collaboration. In addition, we demonstrate many ecological uses in the garden; it uses gray water filtration techniques to bio-activate the water; it incorporates a native grass seed lawn, mixed with native wildflowers; it creates habitat for butterflies, birds, dragonflies, frogs, and other pollinators; and it conserves water by cleaning and reusing water that is diverted from the storm drain and sewer systems.

“Healing Garden” You come home from a hard day’s work. You sit down and take a deep breath, holding a drink maybe. You pause for a moment of meditation, and you begin to recover from the stress of the day. The back of the garden represents a busy street or noisy neighbor, which you need to separate yourself from. The “Healing Garden” can help you achieve that.

“SOMNIUM VIRIDIAN – The Green Dream”
Somnium Viridian from Latin means to “dream green”, and that is the essence of this oasis. This design is meant to illustrate a functional, sustainable garden. We are utilizing solar panels to power the waterfall, which in turn will filter, and store rainwater harvested from the rooftops. All the downspouts from the house are tied into the waterfall to capture up to 1200 gallons of water every storm. Located underground, the reservoir is hidden under the permeable flagstone patio. This water is re-circulated to maintain clean water, and can hold up to 20,000 gallons. This water can then be used to irrigate the moderate-to-low water consuming plants throughout the garden. All boulders, rocks and walls are built with recycled concrete chunks, which are then transformed with a “Faux Rock” finish. These rocks and boulders will be nestled amongst an array of foliage from a “California Creation” style garden. Using plants requiring moderate water consumption such as Pittosporums and Hawthornes. With these plantings we will get not only different leaf color, but a variety of blooming plants as well. All plants are low maintenance, and require pruning only twice a year. This garden is intended to be a getaway from daily life, with the satisfaction of being a sustainable sanctuary. This is a place to meditate and relax amongst the many natural benches and resting areas we have created. This design is meant to mimic nature, so all benches are made from earth or natural wood, and are placed auspiciously to allow the viewer to take in the garden’s beauty. This is a self sufficient design relying only on Mother Nature to keep it alive and thriving. Through the power of the sun and its renewable energy source, the solar panels keep the garden running year round. Then by harvesting water in the winter, this system can keep the garden alive with nature’s rain alone. This is not only a green dream, but a green reality.

“Windows”
Each of us sees the environment from our own point of view, our own window. This garden offers a new window through which to see landscape design in our back yards. A unique melding of an eclectic, vintage style with modern lines to keep it fresh and comfortable. The use of primarily recycled and re-purposed wood and metal products are used in a new way to create a welcoming and personalized style suitable for anything from a cocktail party to a quiet afternoon with a book. These recycled products alongside stone, that will not need to be replaced in our lifetimes, and drought tolerant botanical provides an intriguing and exciting tableau for any Bay Area garden.

“La Vie En Vert”
Serenity surrounds you; the peaceful sweep of the pendulum, the lovely green of the palms. All is quiet here. Water flows by the power of the sun. The patterns in the sand compel meditation. Patiently, the carnivores lie in wait. The only sound is water flowing.

“Water Water everywhere but not a drop to waste!”
Water is a precious resource which most of us just take for granted. What’s going to happen when we start paying as much for water as we do for gas? You may think that this may never happen but we are at war with Southern California for our precious water. California is naturally a dry arid desert in the summer. The lush landscapes of our gardens will disappear if we keep taking our water for granted and just letting it run down the drain.
We have created a garden where water is recycled, filtered, and put to use in the production of food. Now this may sound like an experiment in a laboratory with complex filters, chemicals, fertilizers, specialty soil and the need for a lot of space. While our garden in only 20’x30’ and does it all, it does not look like a biological experiment but a beautiful lush garden with lots of room for entertaining and relaxing. Our beautiful pond is not only a pond but a fish and food production facility. We are using Aquaponics to filer the fish pond and provide water and fertilizer to our hydroponic vegetable beds. We are also recycling grey water from the house into our bog filters where it comes out crystal clear and ready to be used for the irrigation for our garden plants.

“PLANit Green”
A symbolic garden, itself inspired by Carl Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot” speech (1994), is intended to inspire guests to re-connect with our home planet by thinking globally and acting locally. A swirling “Milky Way” planting area surrounds a pervious “Earth” pavilion. Fabricated of materials which include recycled plastic bottles, four living columns, each representing a classical element, provide cooling to counter the heat-island effect created by hard-scape materials, including recycled “Urbanite.” Other sustainable concepts demonstrated include the use of recycled metals, reclaimed wood, eco-friendly finish products, locally-acquired rock, recycled glass, and LED lighting. PLANit Green is responsible, provocative, and beautiful.
