Sleeping out is for everyone, that is, if you are in your own bed. Rebecca Coffman, landscape architect and Tom Reily, landscape contractor, have joined forces to create a romantic way to spend endless nights counting stars in your favorite garden environment. Wake to an outdoor shower in the morning light where the water is collected and used for irrigation. This garden demonstrates green building concepts, including recycled materials, fabrics, furniture and water recycling. An outdoor bed can be a reality for many gardens in the Bay Area during the dry season of summer. Come fall, pack it up and move indoors. Start counting sheep.

This garden is itself a sculpture. Rather than focusing on the vegetation, it is built on forms and the aesthetic qualities of the materials. The surfaces of wood, stone and steel provide the texture of the sculpture, while light and a minimal assortment of California native plants accent its form. It is at once modern and organic, while also requiring minimal care and
maintenance.

Enter through the ancient doors of this garden and encounter striking natural forms enhanced by tall water plants such as lotus, rushes and grasses. The design of the garden is both organic and modern and interacts closely with water. Water represents life, just as it creates life and is an integral part of our lives. In the garden, life is rejuvenated by the sounds, moods and inspiration created by the presence of water and the plants nurtured by it.

It doesn't take a hectare to feed a family four square
Heirlooms in the Cottage or on an Urban Roof
Wine Country Tuscan or Berkeley Locavore
No GMOs are in our food, the nutrients are proof.
Take some dirt; add sunshine, clean water and fresh air
A designer for the garden and you're half way there
When Edibles are planted, sustainable's the fare.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner your neighbor too can share
The earth still laughs in flowers, the chef's gourmet affair
Feed a hungry neighbor, teach the world to share.

Come. Sit. Stay.
Stroll the stone path through the woods, to the patio garden. Dramatic and versatile, the patio and garden provide a peaceful place to enjoy some wine and a good book. Small space gardens are becoming more prevalent and creative in the Bay Area. Spacious and inviting, the patio and its garden, occupying only 260 square feet, seem
much larger. Water, always soothing, brings movement and life to the garden. Lush plantings easy to find and care for, provide year-round beauty. Square foot gardening (originated by Mel Bartholemew) is gaining popularity, and the patio and pots provide many opportunities for plantings, vegetables, water features and art.

Concrete planes create a setting for this garden. Inspired by urban skylines, we set concrete tablets flat, layered, on their side or askew to create a tableau. Voids and space are then utilized, by giving them purpose. Graphic plants, such as yuccas and agaves, exaggerate some of the hard lines. We also include some shrubs to soften hard lines. A water feature becomes a narrow river between the hardscape. Sit on an elevated platform and view the many perspectives of the scapeline.

We have designed a garden based upon characteristics of two powerful elements in nature: water and sun. The geometry that water naturally exudes shall be illustrated with the patio/walkway that surrounds a central pool. This walkway will feature concentric circles, formed from terracotta piping, to emulate the ripples made when a droplet disrupts the surface of still water. A fountain sculpture will pulse in the heart of our garden. The linear nature of the suns rays will be a theme that is echoed throughout the garden. Decking that radiates off of the central patio and the linear adornment of the garden wall represents rays of light bouncing this way and that. Varied plant choices will complement our theme with their form, color and texture. This design pays homage to all the ripples and rays that bring a garden to life.

In the villages of Mallorca, people live with a sense of community that is cultivated by the way they use their outdoor spaces. Like many of the garden terraces in Mallorca, this garden is a front yard. Creating an outdoor living space in front of the house makes a welcoming space for casually meeting and greeting neighbors
and passersby. This front terrace reflects the local climate, focuses on site-appropriate plants, invites wildlife and extends the familys living space into the landscape. Traditional Mediterranean design inherently bolsters the social environment while enhancing the surrounding natural environment.

A sunken oval sitting area nestled in a grove of ancient olive trees provides respite and retreat from worldly cares. With scale and dimensions ideally suited for relaxed and intimate conversations, as well as the sharing of good food and wine, this modern design was envisioned as the perfect picnic spot for a romantic couple or small group of friends. A steel water runnel originating from a small spring cuts through the bench top and drops into the sunken gravel center, releasing gentle notes that mix with the sound of the wind-rustled olive branches above.

We have chosen to bring a hillside hot spring and the stunning view of the ancient spiritual city of Acropolis, once home to kings and now a haven. The icy-blue aragonite and glossy smithsonite rocks that are native to Greece are combined with both travertine and blue lace agate. Since Greece and California share a Mediterranean climate, we include the olive trees to complement the pittosporum that thrives here in backyards. Come view ancient Greece, the heat and the soothing sounds of our springs and the native flora.

Make yourself at home in this campground setting integrated with a Northern California lifestyle. Pitch your tent, sit at the picnic table and enjoy smores as you relax by the fire pit and listen to the beautiful waterfall while it
cascades into the pond below. As you reflect on the trees and ferns, notice the surrounding garden replete with azaleas, rhododendrons and other compatible flora.

Perched on the edge of a coastal California canyon, a multilevel terrace is nestled in a boulder-strewn landscape with sweeping views of the distant Pacific Ocean. The temperate climate coupled with the naturalistic environment provides an ideal setting for entertaining, relaxing and gardening in a style that is at once indigenous and eccentric. Drought-tolerant species are massed into the sun-drenched terrain, creating a southwestern, subtropical setting that belies categorical description. In contrast, the sight and sound of falling water enhances the bathing terrace and provides a serene atmosphere for rest and renewal.

Designing with plastic doesnt have to look cheap or tacky. Our garden is composed of recycled plastic products that would normally find themselves tossed in the trash. Our landscape features low-water-usage plants, life-size
mannequins fashioned out of moss and succulents and a festive dining area for warm weather outdoor entertaining. Our goal is to educate the public in creating a greener environment through recycling and reuse of plastic materials. We want the public to understand that a bottle cap doesnt have to be garbage it can be a piece inspiring the gardeners artistic vision.

Dreams of Peace was inspired by childhood dreams of living in a magical bedroom jungle. As a landscape designer, Ive spent many years working with people creating peaceful garden spaces that encourage relaxation. During this time, I have become increasingly aware of the direct link between how we feel and the environment
that surrounds us. We have exaggerated this by designing spaces that inspire restorative feelings in the sanctuary of a garden. Following our passion for conservation of resources, we have chosen to use environmentally sustainable materials and by grouping plants in aspects that complement their growing requirements.

Step out of the house into our live/work/play garden studio. Here in the urban jungle, we explore the boundaries of materials and their use in the outdoor environment. Our plan draws on the golden mean or rectangle with proportions that are consistent and continuous. The five elements of fire, wood, earth, metal and water are woven in proportion and reflect the inherent balance and harmony of nature. Explore the simple framework, where an ancient runnel reinvented for the modern era transects the garden. On one side planting is lush and tropical with strelitzia, nephentes and bromeliads and on the other a xeriscape with dasylirion, chondropetalum and succulents. The studio offers the capacity for sun or shade, privacy or inclusion, meditation or performance you decide.
