Let’s rethink earthy elements in the way we design, grow and garden…“California Style.” The natural elements of water, air, and earth converge with the architectural elements of metal, ceramic, and wood, reinventing the landscape. Channeling positive energies is a metal pyramid structure with suspended air plants, bromeliads, and more. Revitalize your mind and body with the sounds of water gardens, sights of a living wall-top of hydroponic edibles and a raised straw bale earth garden with the scents of gardenias and garden roses surrounding a meditation area. Rethink the way we garden and live with a renewed sense and sensibility.

Our garden will demonstrate the ability to utilize limited garden area by transforming a small space into one which stimulates and awakens the senses and nourishes the body. "Soul Food" will demonstrate our unique approach to combining traditional landscape elements with exotic plants, hand blown glass accents, and integrated lighting, to create a delightful experience for the observer.

“Soul Food” offers an experience of the possible alchemy between elements and serves them up as a feast for the spirit. Nature itself has inspired our garden. We will feature trends such as; raised planting areas of vegetables, fruits, and herbs, and the visual flow and calming sound of a waterfall gently which surround the voices of nature certain to be drawn to the lush habitat. Our audience will leave with a sense of how a small space can be transformed into a place to relax, learn, & grow, a place overflowing with ”soul food".

Our garden illustrates Filoli’s dedication to the preservation and stewardship of the land. The garden is a celebration of Filoli’s cultural tradition and its commitment to organic food production. The garden design reflects some of the traditional elements present in Filoli’s formal gardens, kitchen garden, walled garden, vegetable garden and orchard. The garden draws inspiration from the English renaissance and Celtic features present at Filoli. These include the stone walls, sundial, ironwork and paving. Our dovecote is made with vertical succulents and a green roof. The garden is a lesson from the past & represents a philosophy that fights to promote habitat for the love of life.

Come in, and wander around this playful garden, and notice all the details because IT'S ALIVE! From the lush plantings to the live creatures, this ecosystem is teaming with life. Set in a California garden, with drought resistant plants, this is a water-conserving creation. Even the waterfall is recycling its water, using only a few gallons per day. Utilizing energy-efficient pumps and biological filters, the cascades create an earth-friendly paradise. Meander on natural flagstone to explore the live wonders contained in this sanctuary. Then take a rest and enjoy the scenery on the many natural benches and retreats, but keep your eyes open because IT'S ALIVE!!

Sustainability is perhaps the fastest growing area of design and incorporates ideas such as up-cycling, the goal of which is to prevent wasting potentially useful materials by making use of existing ones. This garden utilizes discarded materials which were set to be recycled in conjunction with drought tolerant plantings. The circle, the strongest structural shape in nature, and a symbolic representation of cycles, is used here functionally and repeatedly as an artistic expression. The installation serves to question, examine and challenge traditional perceptions of sustainability, types of materials used, and how we integrate these ideas into our gardens and life.

Sanctuary is necessary for all of us, as we move through life with its many changes. Revitalization comes from tending to our need for space and solitude.

Walk through the spiral, and into the core of the space, where the outside world is temporarily closed from view. Allow yourself to take a minute to clear the cobwebs from your mind, and restore your energy for the rest of your day.

Inside, you will find a Rainwater catchment habitat pond. This is a specially designed feature that will accommodate your roof top rain water during the rainy season. The space below the feature is large catchment area, filled with drain rock. Water from your drain spout is diverted into the feature, and it fills, making it a seasonal pond.

The walls of the spiral are planted with a songbird habitat garden. The plantings are carefully arranged to make sure that all the elements birds need, such as: different heights for birds to “step up” within the planting; plants that provide nectar in the spring and summer, and berries in the winter; tall trees to provide cover from aerial predators; flowers that provide seed; and many places for a diversity of bird species to find shelter.

Inside, you will also find a place to write a word and add it to the piece. Perhaps you would like to make a wish for yourself or a loved one or a friend. Grab a pebble and throw it into the pond.
This is your chance to welcome the changes in your life.

"Latitude" refers not only to the angular distance from the equator used to determine locations on the earth’s surface, but also a freedom from narrow restrictions. The Bay Area has what is known as a Mediterranean climate, a climate we share with many other cities around the world which also are located on our latitudinal line. The Mediterranean climate is known for its dry summers and mild winters. This unique combination allows for a diverse range of plant life that can be used interchangeably between many of the regions sharing this same latitude, including ornamental trees as well as a wide range of edibles. Over many generations the native California landscape has changed due to the importation of exotic plants. The melding of the native and the non native has given rise to a unique botanical palate that is distinctly Californian. It is in this that we see a freedom from narrow restrictions.

In our garden we use the setting of a small Californian residential back yard to display this diversity; the native Coast Live Oak is joined by the non native Olive and Arbutus, we also see edibles in self-contained raised planters, designed to accommodate their higher water needs. The horizontal grid lines integrated into the garden are reminiscent of the latitudinal lines used on the globe. The modern style of the garden reminds us that the Mediterranean garden comes in many styles and does not need to follow any traditional rules in order to thrive.

This garden mimics the ocean's tranquility with a restrained palate, making use of natural and recycled materials. It has a light footprint in the sand.

Included are pacific coast native plants, succulents and other beach-y plants that create a habitat for native honeybees, butterflies and hummingbirds.

The style is organic modern California beach nonchalance - i.e. gnarly chic.

Growing up in beach towns in California and childhood vacations in Mexico inspired this garden.

This garden has outdoor rooms with design ideas to steal and a backyard beach house vibe.

Guests are placed center-stage amidst a soaring bamboo grove, where the dramatic setting showcases cutting-edge green technology and stylish outdoor living. The garden pays homage to the versatility of locally quarried native stone, a great way to go green by staying local and using natural materials. The premiere of world-class watering systems and a locally invented LEED-rated building product show that California gardens hold their own on the global green stage. The "reality show" garden demonstrates that, with a little bit of California ingenuity and flair, everyone can enjoy the best that California gardens have to offer.
