Mary Hickman

Mary Hickman has been gardening since her early years in college, receiving a Bachelor in Science in Plant Science from UC Davis. She worked in the nursery industry while in college. After graduation, she found a calling to learn organic farming and spent several years working on small diverse market gardens. For a few seasons, she was responsible for harvesting and selling flowers at markets.

Family life with her 3 children changed Mary's farm focus, but in 1997 she started working very part-time as a gardening consultant, going to clients' homes, working alongside them, and answering garden questions. This business model developed over the years to Mary's current role as a horticulturist who tends to customers' gardens and commercial properties, consulting while gardening. This is the Plant side of Plant and Bunch.

In 2019 Mary added in foraging foliages from her client gardens to provide fresh local greenery to floral designers. She has expanded this Bunch side of her business to selling direct to florists in the Sacramento and Bay Area florists and Sonoma florists through Gather Flora San Francisco and Gather Flora Sonoma Hub.

Mary recently moved to her own urban farm in Sacramento with her cat and a million plants. She is developing her third-acre lot into a foliage-cutting garden for floral designers and looks forward to the tiny plants filling out. She continues to combine gardening for clients and cutting foliage weekly for her florist orders.
